Religious Education Department

The subjects within the Civilisation faculty help students understand the world around them and their place within it. Religious education helps prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they will encounter in later life. The Religious Education curriculum at Madani provides students with the skills and knowledge to develop their identity, beliefs and values as they explore their own faith as well as the range of faiths and values in British society. Students will engage critically in discussing and debating challenging questions raised by religion and non-religious worldviews such as humanism, and recognise and appreciate the diversity which exist within communities and individuals in the UK and throughout the world.

At KS3, students will explore questions about the meaning, purpose and value of life, beliefs about God, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. They will learn about and from different religions and worldviews in order to explore, compare, analyse and consider different answers to these questions. They will learn to weigh up the value of different sources of wisdom, develop and express their own insights in response and learn to agree and disagree respectfully. Through this process they will develop their own ideas, values and identities. The study of Religious Education will also enable them to engage in dialogue in order to participate positively in our society of diverse religions and worldviews.

All students study Religious Education at GCSE and continue to develop and build upon the knowledge and skills they acquired in KS3 to develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for, the study of religion. Madani Schools Federation follows the Edexcel A Specification which includes an in depth study of Islam as a lived religion within the UK and throughout the world, which makes up seventy-five percent of the course and a shorter study of Christianity which accounts for the remaining twenty-five percent. Students write three exam papers at the end of Year Eleven which will make up their final GCSE grade. The study of religion is linked to the wider world in order to explore one’s beliefs, reflect on and engage with fundamental questions and respond to them in a critical and personal way. GCSE Religious Education provides students with the opportunity to reflect on and develop their beliefs, values, opinions and attitudes and to consider divergent views in light of their learning.
